Wellness Policy

As the School Nurse and a member of the Wellness Committee, I would like to remind you of the Brownstown Central Community School Corporation Wellness policy. This policy that was new last year, was prompted at a federal level due to an increase in chronic illness and obesity in our school aged children across the country.  Overweight and Obesity diagnoses have become the fastest growing epidemics today.

While our corporation does many things very well, we are always striving to make improvements that are in the best interest of our students and staff.  You may hear more about this policy throughout the school year.  Drastic changes usually result in failure and we want to make sure the changes we implement are successful and our goals are actually attainable.  Through education and example we hope to gradually improve the health knowledge of our staff and students.

Ultimately, the goal of our wellness policy is to help students learn to respect and care for their bodies.  We want to help establish healthy habits that will carry into adulthood and improve our student’s overall quality of life.

Parent/Guardian expectations:

We would appreciate your support of this policy publicly and help set an example, by providing non-food rewards alternatives at school such as a small game, puzzle book, stickers, pencils, bookmarks, or ribbons.  You can also support your child’s teachers to implement some of these or similar creative ideas.

The school corporation encourages and supports parental involvement in many activities.  So I am including a list of healthy snacks at school for your child’s classroom or activity.  Please remember to discuss with your child’s teacher or coach about any dietary restrictions or food allergies that you might be unaware of within the group you are supplying the snack to before bringing any item in to eat.
